The EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR, Regulation (EU) 2023/988) has applied since 13 December 2024 to non-food consumer products sold to EU customers — including online and by small makers. Here's what it means for your Etsy and Shopify listings.

Informational guide, not legal advice. See the official text: Regulation (EU) 2023/988.

Information to display on an online listing

Who can be the EU responsible person?

An economic operator established in the EU: the manufacturer itself, an importer, an authorised representative appointed in writing, or a fulfilment service provider. A Great Britain address (England, Scotland, Wales) does not qualify; Northern Ireland, where GPSR also applies, is a special case.

Typical cases

On Etsy and Shopify

Etsy added product-safety fields for sales to the EU — check its Help Center for the current steps. On Shopify, add the information to product pages (description or metafields). If you sell on both, keep it identical.

Checklist

  1. List products and identify each manufacturer.
  2. Identify an EU responsible person where needed.
  3. Write warnings in the relevant languages.
  4. Add a product reference or batch number.
  5. Fill Etsy fields and Shopify product pages consistently.
  6. Keep your risk analysis and technical documentation.
